For Good Relationships with Yourself

You can write bad poetry, can you not? Why do so? Here are three reasons:

1. If you think it doesn’t have to rhyme or be any good, you will write a poem each time you are struck by awe, struck in the gut, struck in the heart for good or bad.

2. If you write some, you will read one of mine. (below) Then you will start a heartfelt relationship with me.

3. You will soon afterward discover what is really important to you in all your relationships.

Many people assume that poetry is hard to understand or boring. Some academic poems are boring because they are simply showing off erudition. But poems about momentous or weird little experiences that strike the poet are wonderful to hear. Some are better than monologues from well known stand-up comics.

Poetry likes a strong feeling and the courage to express it with the power of that feeling. No holding back. Flat out condensation of the moment.

When you write bad poetry you feel gloriously alive. You improve all your relationships.

Eventually, you may re-write and turn your poems into some really good stuff.

Poetry won’t make you money, but it will make you rich. Here’s one of mine that set me free. See if you can tell how it set me free. If you have any questions, write to me. evycole@hughes.net

CRAVINGS by Evelyn Cole

I want to put out bowls of candy/to welcome every guest/ all kinds of sweets/ dripping with decadence

to offer red wine with legs/ stuffed grape leaves, Retsina, Italian prawns/carrot flan, Incan fire dip

and succulent salads /chilled ready to serve/ spinach, asparagus, pistachios /all fresh aphrodisiacs

marinated meats/ ready to grill to any taste/ from rare to rubber/ spiced tofu for some

a full shelf of pies Ive just baked /with perfect crusts /Tiramisu and mocha mousse too /and apricot clafoutis

I have a craving for candy I dont eat/a passion for cooking concoctions others wont touch/ a yearning for money to give it away/

Why?

A craving to please /to ease

Why? A craving to give /to live?

Ah, Do I need to put out /or die?

~~~
That last stanza took me by surprise.
Here is what the former U.S. poet laureate, Stanley Kunitz, says about poetry. It’s wild and wonderful.
Saturated with Impulse Stanley Kuntiz from The Braid
“So much of the creative life has its source in the erotic. The first impulse is strongly erotic, but then one becomes reflective–a philosophic human being, an explorer–and then as one grows older and older theres a need to renew that energy associated with erotic impulse.
“A poet without a strong libido almost inevitably belongs to the weaker category; such a poet can carry off a technical effect with a degree of flourish, but the poem does not embody the dominant emotive element in the life process. The poem has to be saturated with impulse and that means getting down to the very tissue of experience. How can this element be absent from poetry without thinning out the poem?
“That is certainly one of the problems when making a poem is thought to be a rational production. The dominance of reason, as in eighteenth-century poetry, diminished the power of poetry.
“Reason certainly has a place, but it cannot be dominant. Feeling is far more important in the making of the poem. And the language itself has to be a sensuous instrument; it cannot be a completely rational one. In rhythm and sound, for example, language has the capacity to transcend reason; its all like erotic play.
“Thats the nature of aesthetic impulse, aesthetic receptivity. Whether youre walking through the garden or reading a poem, theres a sense of fulfillment. Youve gone through a complete chain of experience, changing and communicating with each step and with each line so that you are linked with the phenomenon of time itself. The erotic impulse is so basic to human experience that we can never be free from it, even in old age.”
So, dear reader, go forth and write poetry.
Chinese people love excitement, and Chinese New Year and other traditional festivals are times of special celebration and joy. Singing and dancing are everywhere. In spite of the heavy influence of Western culture in the increasingly cosmopolitan Taiwan, the various customs and activities accompanying traditional fests and celebrations are still observed with enthusiasm. Many of these folk customs and performances are incorporated into the festival celebrations and competitions held on Chinese New Year and other festivals, and have been passed down from generation to generation. The most common of these are perhaps the dragon dance and lion dance. Children growing up in Taiwan, even ones who have not yet taken their first steps, have all seen one of these performances from their fathers’ shoulders or on TV at home.
There are innumerable other kinds of festive folk performances, such as “riding in a boat on land,” walking on stilts, “carrying a youth piggyback,” the clam spirit dance, and so forth.
In “carrying a youth piggyback,” a young woman straps a head-to-waist wooden mannequin of an old person to the front of her body, giving the appearance that an old person is carrying her piggyback. This portrayal of two persons by one is performed as a burlesque pantomime.
In the clam spirit dance, a young woman puts on a clam shell woven out of bamboo strips. In one sketch, the clam spirit opens and closes her shell in response to fisherman casting and pulling in his net, but who each time gets nothing in return for his efforts. In another, a snipe tries to peck out the clam’s tasty flesh for a meal, but instead gets his beak stuck in the clamshell. This performance inevitably draws side-splitting laughter and roaring applause from the audience.
Popular Chinese folk games that go back thousands of years, such as playing diabolo, kicking a shuttlecock, jumping rope, and spinning tops, challenge and delight youngsters even today.
With encouragement and support from the government, games, stage shows, and customs such as these have been brought into the twentieth century in the Taiwan today. Detailed information on their history, development, materials, technique, performance, and so forth, is widely available in cultural centers, bookstores, and craft shops around the island in the form of home videos and books. Elementary school students often get to try their hand at making some of the equipment used in these various folk arts themselves, under the guidance of an experienced teacher. in this way, these ancient cultural treasures are kept vital and new, and a part of contemporary life, so that they may continue to enrich the lives of China’s people for generations to come.
There are many reasons that you may need to learn about Hindu Poetry. What is it really? Why should I learn about it? What can it do for me? These are all questions that you may be asking yourself.
What is Urdu Poetry?
It’s a form of Hindu poetry that has been around for many years. You may not understand it if it has not been translated for you into English but it is a great form of poetry to learn about. If you are not familiar with the Hindu language, you may have trouble reading it because it is normally dine for those that can read Hindu and not for those that are only English speaking. You can have it translated but it may lose the thing that helps make it so special in the first place. This choice is up to you and what you want to do with it as well as what you may want to learn from it.
What Can It Do For Me?
There are many things that learning this Urdu poetry can do for you. It can teach you to respect other forms of art and to learn about them whenever you can. You may not be able to read the Urdu poetry right away, but taking the time to learn shows great respect for the culture and for the poetry that it is. Art is something that should be loved and learned when it can be. People take for granted the power that words can have over a person or even a country. It’s made to get to the heart of you and your life. If you can learn to listen to it, then you are well on your way to learning to appreciate the poetry that it can be.
Why Should I Learn It?
You should learn about it and maybe even learn the language that it is in because of the cultural benefits that you can get from it. You may also be able to learn about what the Urdu poetry is really saying to the world. Many people are not aware of what this can do for them and what benefits learning a new language for art can do for them. You should keep an open mind so that you can absorb what the Urdu poetry is saying to you as a person.
As you can see there is a lot that you can learn from Urdu poetry and a lot of reasons that you should learn as much as you can from it. Many people don’t take the time to learn about it and figure out what it’s saying to them as a human being. You can learn a lot about how a person feels just by paying attention to the words that they wrote in the first place. You can learn a lot about people and yourself along the way. You may want to consider the thought of learning to read Hindu so that you can understand the words as they were meant to be read.
There comes daily in the life of an old man who has retired and is continually in the presence of his wifeinstead of at work where he belongsthe challenge to answer her questions. Remember, old people forget easily so that is to our advantage.
Questions come in many forms and at odd times. It can drive a man crazy trying to think of a short wife-shoo-away answer on the spot. Its better to be prepared with some stock answers.
Also, a man needs some extracurricular activities to keep him out of the house as much as possible. I for example have two horses. I can always tell my wife Im going out to check on them. One is north of town and the other is south of town so I can go any direction I want to.
As some of you know, these horses were given to me by my friends. They feed the horses, clean the stall, pay the vet bills, exercise them and groom them or whatever else a horse needs. I just want to say I have a horse. They agreed to this so for all worthy-excuse purposes, I have horses. My grandkids like to go out and see my horses.
Im in the process of building my herd to five critters. I told me wife this so I can always say, Im going to see a man about a horse.
Here are some stock answers to give your wife:
Answer: I agree with you. Go ahead and do whatever you decided.
Answer: Nope. Did you write it down?
Answer: Yes, I think you did that.
Answer: Go ahead and send it. It wont hurt if he (or she) gets two cards (presents, invitations).
Answer: Im just kidding (joshing).
Answer: That may be the way it plays out.
Answer: Rome wasnt built in a day.
Answer: You always look gorgeous to me.
Answer: Its only money.
Answer: Sure I want to go with you. Right now?
Answer: No I never heard that choice tidbit.
Answer: She (or he) did!
Answer: Ill be with you in a minute.
Answer: Yes that is a lovely bird (flower, tree).
Answer: Ill have to look that up for you on Google or Ask.
Answer: Some people just have everything.
Answer: It could well rain (snow, hail, sleet) today.
Answer: Ill get right on it tomorrow.
Answer: Oh, sorry! Today (tomorrow, that) is my fishing (hunting, golfing, kayaking, archery) day.
Answer: We can do that as soon as my treasure ship (Brinks truck) docks.
Answer: Yes, I still love you and I always will.
Answer: No, if anything it makes you look much thinner.
Answer: You look good in any color, especially (red, green, blue, mauve, burgundy, chartreuse, yellow, polka dots, stripes).
Answer: Sure we can go out. How about lunch (breakfast)? Would you like Mexican (Chinese, the Golden Coral), or we could go to that expensive place if you want a less expensive birthday present.
Answer: You want to go on a cruise? Great! Me too! Now which line had a pandemic (fire, murder, pirates)?
And remember that if you take my advice and start building a herd of horses you will always be able to say, Im going to see a man about a horse.
Urban Decay
Slowly descending
The spiral staircase
Into urban decay
On this night long journey -
Preceded by flashlight
And followed by the full moon,
Whose eyes hold us all in
His view as the street light
Flickers in and out in orange shades.
Spirit of the Past
The spirit of the past
Lives in
The whispers of the wind and
The hoot of the hoary owl,
Which echoes sadly evermore
Against the lonely trees -
Who for days uncounted
Have seen the endless journeys of men
Come to and end beneath them -
This final respite
Marked by names and dates
On lonely tombs.
Ghost Hunting
There is a ghost in the shell
Of every old place -
Whether the unclaimed metal skeleton
Of an abandoned steel mill,
Or the spirit that lingers
On the grounds of a historic graveyard.
These ancient places carry
The immortal remnants
Of old civilization.
Exploring them to
Examine their secrets
Like an urban archaeologist -
Chasing down the answers
To urban legends
And ghost stories -
Simply to know
What came before.
Abandoned Factory
Once full of life,
This old building;
With memories locked away
Under layers of dust.
Cigarette butts and broken beer bottles
Litter the lonely lot.
Once vital and active
In the world of mortal men,
Now immortal in its skeletal frame -
The ghost in the shell of the
Abandoned factory
Speaks secrets of long misused tools,
Broken cinder blocks,
And locked away rooms -
Modern ruins and electric tombs
Long left behind
On this hidden highway.
And evermore in urban legend.
Stomping Ground
Traversing the rural fringes
Of urban reality,
Haunting the spirits
With lamps and curious minds.
Marble City
I know when you were born and died,
But I want to see beyond the moss
On your gravestone.
Who were you in life?
Old Church
I. Cathedral.
I go back in time as I brush webs of dust
From the stained glass window,
Wondering what secrets this
Old church buried with its dead.
II. Esoteric.
As stained as memory,
This old window yet reflects light
Like the sermons once held
In the holy hall.
Farewell Party (Leaving the Old Church)
The ravens on the roof
Stand guard like gargoyles -
These grim feathered ghouls
Perch atop the once proud passages
That they now pretend to own,
And sing a sad a cappella
In mockery of memory.
To End a Journey
I leave as the morning light
Lifts the late night’s velvet veil
And the moon bids farewell
To the starry sky,
Wondering if warning signs
Will be like hieroglyphs
To a future age.
Into the Light
Walking at the crack of dawn on
This early morn,
Through fresh cut grass
And beside foggy fields,
My shoes soaked with dew -
I stop to take a drink
And pause to think:
This simple heavens
Greatern
That urban hell.
Atalaya
Dark watch tower
Overlooking the lonely beach
Built without blueprint -
Summer home sculpted
From brick and mortar,
Its plans first and solely sketched
In the dreams of a genius and poet.
Ordered chaos - artistic anarchy;
The sculpture room seems to
Summon the spirit
Of the poet’s late wife -
As if the ghost
Of the lady sculptor
Haunts the mossy halls
Just to finish her last work.
Manifest Destiny
How wild was the west?
How true rang the gold,
That men sought and killed
For it?
How mighty the steed,
And how much mightier
The man who rode it
And held the law on his hip?
How long the roads of those days?
How deep the secrets?
Would the spirits of
Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp
Speak to us in the old saloon?
I met CAS on the docks of Poseidonia
He was playing the god Ougabalys
With three horns
Above his double crown;
He had eyes of the dead
As if he had pulled them out of a
Rotting head; incredible, insane
But ghouls and spirits came
To see him all the same:
Yes, even in the dead lands he
Had fame, lapsing fame.
(Then, in the second part of
My dream): He was standing on
The decks of some serpent looking ship
Sailing off to unknown seas,
While sailors were cutting off his legs
Below his trembling knees.
Foaming he was, from his brow
Enormous lumps of sweat and muck
But he never bellowed once
Below the gloomy eternal sky,
With camel breath, he just sighed.
I would guess the sea worms
Are now his eternal guests? And other
Ocean-sea serpents that swim
Or monsters with fins;
From where I seen him last,
There is a lot of bellowing…
Or were they laughs?
Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) was a close friend with the famous H.P. Lovecraft, who is best known for his horror, in particular short store horror, and especially, The Dunwich Horror. He died at an early age of cancer; whereas, Mr. Smith lived on to pick up the slack. Smith, was pure poet for the most part, but got involved I do believeunwillinglywith short stories to pay bills, and did ok in that genre with the magazines of his day of that genre. Smith wrote about 700 poems, in now what are considered classic books; horror, science-fiction fantasy, or mythos as they called them in his day. He does write startling tales of intrigue, incorporates violence behind most of his solidly packed themes. Some of his most chilling works I feel, and mysterious, are in his art work, paintings and clay figurines, if that is what you can call these little devils. And so in my poem, I simply plant a few reflecting images of his phantasmagoric worlds, in this case, the dead world into his realm once again; I dont think hell mind.
In addition to Smiths Lovecraft relationship George Sterling, the great poet from San Francisco, of images, tutored him.
With cable, satellite, DVD, downloading, digital on demand, and the whole of the internet to play with, these days we have a massive choice of entertainment available through our TVs, PCs, and even our mobile phones!
In the past, TV shows would be aired once, and possibly repeatedly occasionally; but the growth in services such as ‘TV on demand’, has meant that hundreds of TV shows from our past and present are now available to watch, whenever we feel like it.
Childhood nostalgia is for a large part driving the desire to watch classic TV shows from our youth, and the list of favourites is long. Many vintage shows are now available for download, such as ‘Catweazle’, a series from the 70s that followed an eccentric 11th Century wizard who accidentally travelled through time to the year 1970; or the classic game show ‘Catchphrase’, hosted by Irish comedian Roy Walker whereby contestants had to identify a familiar phrase which would be represented by a large screen animation, often involving the show’s yellow robot mascot, ‘Mr Chips’.
Many people are now able to relive childhood and teenage times by revisiting their favourite TV programmes of days gone by, and the entertainment industry has realised that nostalgia is big business. People love to recall and reminisce on characters and storylines of the past, and they are willing to pay for it. Many shows that have not been seen for a couple of decades are now selling well on DVD off the back of retro appeal.
There’s also certain nostalgia chic that surrounds the TV shows of our youth, which continues to influence fashion; T-shirts with retro icons such as the A-Team, Knight Rider, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, The Moomins and a number of video game characters such as Super Mario and Pac Man are commonly seen splashed across the shirts of hip 20 and 30 somethings who are keen to proclaim their love of shows of the past.
This era of information, where we can delve into the past and present world of entertainment is an exciting time to be living in. Perhaps our only problem is that there is now so much which appeals to us - both past and present - that working out what to watch is getting increasingly more difficult.
Thankfully, it’s easy to find entertainment news and listings which are an important part of most newspapers and consumer magazines; while there are of course many websites devoted to TV and film as well as celebrity gossip, so even if there’s nothing on the box, you’ll always be able to delve into the plethora of programming from the past.
We mentioned back in May that Turkish beauty and entertainment queen Hlya Avsar has had her detractors. But it wasn’t until recently that they began lining up against her in such numbers. And they don’t mind playing rough either.
For instance, the well-respected (and usually liberal-minded) female newspaper columnist Ayse Arman led off her anti-Avsar attack in late September saying, “I don’t descend to Hlya Avsar’s low class!”
That remark came after a series of exchanges between columnist Arman and the loose-lipped entertainer that began when Avsar made the politically charged statement that, “Turks who want to create a separate state should go ahead and do so. Let them live the way they want to live. For example, if Kurds want to establish a Kurdish state… it’s similar to Turkey’s desire to join the European Union.”
When she heard Avsar’s remark, Arman riposted, “There are some people in show-business whose mouth-zipper is broken!”
Arman added, “Avsar should stick to what she’s good at…beauty, acting, singing, entertaining — and being cute. But when it comes to political subjects, especially heavy political issues…then I say, ‘Hlya… Keep away, woman!’”
These words naturally upset Ms. Avsar, and she came back with a salvo of her own. “Ayse Arman writes too much about sex in her newspaper column. She’s got lovemaking, and such, on the brain. Well, she also practices what she preaches. She enticed the husband of a woman-friend of mine — and broke up the couple’s marriage. If I enter politics, I’ll appoint Arman as the ‘Minister Responsible for Breaking Up Happy Marriages’.”
And in Arman’s news-column the next day entitled, “Look At This Nasty Talk” Ms. Arman retorted, “I’ve learned moral lessons from almost everyone I know — at one time or another. The one exception is Hlya Avsar…who, with a personal history like hers, has nothing to teach me or anyone else — in the morals department.”
Arman concluded…”I suppose dear readers, that you’re expecting me to fire back at Ms. Avsar, aren’t you…? Well, I’m afraid I’m going to disappoint…and leave her talking to herself in the gutter where she belongs!”
And it’s not just Newspaper Columnists who’ve been having a field day with Ms. Avsar lately. Her peers in the entertainment-business too are joining ranks against her…
John Donne is unusual, if not unique, for his era in that courtly love hardly appears in his poetry at all. Courtly love seems to depend on the lover being unsuccessful, whereas Donne rejoices in success at every level. And the courtly love poet always expresses the same aspects of love, the range of experiences and emotions dealt with being very limited. In contrast Donne expresses an enormously wide range of feelings in his Songs and Sonnets, all relating to the experience of love, but varying from the heights of ecstasy to the depths of despair. This variety of feeling lends Donne’s poetry much of its impact, for we seem to be reading an individual’s personal experience of love, and not just a poet’s contribution to a long-standing tradition of poetic love.
We have seen how in The Extasie Donne describes love as a sublime union of two souls. This, perhaps is the highest form of love, but by no means the only one. The Dreame expresses a passionate mood of a more down-to-earth nature.
Enter these armes, for since thou thoughtst it best,
Not to dreame all my dreame, let’s do the rest.
The Sunne Rising expresses the reckless pride and satisfaction felt by the lover in bed with his mistress.
Busie old foole, unruly Sunne,
Why dost thou thus,
Through windowes, and through curtaines call on us?
In The Flea Donne adopts a cynical and rather flippant tone towards his woman, using his wit to try to belittle and overcome her moral arguments, in favour of immediate pleasure.
Marke but this flea, and marke in this,
How little that which thou deny’st me is
For Donne, love can lead to suffering and disillusionment as well as to ecstasy. A Nocturnall upon S. Lucie’s day, Being the shortest day is an extremely powerful evocation of the suffering caused by the death of a loved one, an experience which takes him beyond suffering to a state of absolute nothingness.
. . . Yea plants, yea stones detest
And love; All, all some properties invest;
If I an ordinary nothing were,
As shadow, ‘a light, and body must be here.
But I am none;
In Twicknam Garden Donne expresses extremes of disillusionment, his view of love here being totally opposed to his view in The Extasie:
The spider love, which transubstantiates all,
And can convert Manna to gall,
And his view of woman is totally opposed to the view expressed in most of his love poems:
Nor can you more judge womans thought by teares,
Than by her shadow, her what she weares.
O perverse sexe, where none is true but shee,
Who’s therefore true, because her truth kills mee.
Perhaps the most extreme anti-love poem of Donne’s, and certainly the most un-courtly, is The Apparition. The bitterness expressed here is so intense that it is surely a hate poem; it opens:
When by thy scorne, O murdress, I am dead,
And continues with the lover threatening to haunt his mistress after his death.
Finally we ought to consider whether Donne’s poetry expresses real love at all, or whether, as some critics suggest, he was merely a talented poet using his wit and ingenuity to create clever poems. Johnson said of the Metaphysical poets: ‘Their courtship was void of fondness and their lamentation of sorrow.’ He did not feel that Donne’s poetry moved the affections, or that Donne had necessarily felt the emotions in order to write the poems.
Donne’s poems are extraordinarily witty and ingenious, but this does not exclude the possibility that they also contain strong emotion. Donne’s poems are quite capable of stirring the emotions, and no matter how clever his conceits, or revolutionary his thought, his poems would not work without a seed of genuine feeling at their centre.
